Overall maximum benefit

An overall maximum benefit is the total amount of money that an insurance company will spend on coverage for a policy. An overall maximum benefit can generally be found on most international health insurance plans. Overall maximum benefits fall into one of two kinds:

Annual maximum benefit

The insurance company will put a maximum limit on the cost of treatment it is willing to spend on an insured person during the policy year. This amount will be renewed every year at the renewal of the policy. With an annual maximum benefit regardless of how much is spent on medical treatment throughout the year it does not matter as long as the costs do not exceed the annual maximum.

Lifetime maximum benefit

This is the maximum amount of money that an insurer will spend on treatment over the lifetime of a policy. After the policy's lifetime maximum benefit is reached the insurer will not pay for any further medical treatment.
